Get Your Band On

Bands we have just discovered

GYBO sifts through hundreds of bands a week. Here, we pick out the best.

City Hero

Everyday I log on to Myspace; every day I get a handful of friend requests and messages from bands. I listen to as many as possible, in the time available. Not as many as I would like but then I have a good many other things I need to do in a day.

But this morning I got one of those one in thousand experiences. A band from Birmingham called City Hero put in a friend request. I added and checked out their tracks. Wow! I played the first track "The Dream" and then went on to play all the rest, over and over again.

All music is matter of personal taste and no matter how professional and objective you try to be, there are always going to be some tracks that really blow your socks off. This band reaches right back to my roots as a rock music fan, to the early days of my entry into rock music and to the band that won we over in the early 70s: Boy Hits Car, Staind, Linkin Park and various other nu-rock bands that were playing the UK festivals at that time.

I have to say, City Hero's tracks were just totally stunning. The vocals of Guy Jones were some of the best I have heard: crystal clear articulation, a powerful voice with a tone full of rich colour that brings the songs to life. The band plays with passion and commitment and creative instrumental arrangement, adding sparkling and atmospheric layers of musical texture that really sell the songs. The tracks range from tender heart clinching passages to huge swathes of spine tingling power. I think City Limits will go far and I am so looking forward to seeing if their live experience lives up to these top notch recordings.

Totally thrilling.
